So what exactly is a capsule wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a collection of versatile pieces that can be combined in a bunch of different ways. They usually have a color theme so everything can be mixed and matched to your heart’s content, giving you a variety of outfits with just a few pieces.
What do I need?
This totally varies depending on you! You will ultimately be wearing the pieces, so it’s important that you take your lifestyle into account. Do you work in a corporate setting? Make sure that you’ve got pieces that will be office appropriate and give you enough options for the week! Is athleisure your jam? You may choose to have more leggings in your capsule wardrobe.
Are there limitations on colors?
Nope! Not at all. If you google “capsule wardrobe” you’ll find a a lot of images with neutral toned colors. That’s because when you’re mixing and matching the pieces, you want to make sure you’ll be able to wear each piece with others in your collection. That being said, you can always add in colors and keep the versatility in your mind to make sure you can still create a few outfits using the pieces in your collection!
Let’s build a capsule wardrobe using pieces from amazon! Here are a few things I think you’ll need in your collection.
Tops
Tank Top
A basic tank is a must. I love this tank and think that the neckline is super flattering. It could easily be dressed up for a night out using some jewelry and a cute skirt or made casual with a pair of jeans. The specific shirt below is actually a bodysuit, which means it’s perfect for wearing with anything high waisted! Plus, it comes in a bunch of colors! If you like to tuck in your shirts, bodysuits are definitely the way to go. Also, if high necks are more your thing than square necks, check out this one here.
Long Sleeved Top
This is another basic for your capsule wardrobe so you’re prepared for all of the seasons.
Button Down Shirt
This is a classic piece and it’s so versatile. There’s a reason why you see it everywhere.
Sweater
A crewneck sweater (especially when paired with a collared shirt) is so versatile. This comes in a few colors and its a great basic to have in your closet.
Dressy/Going Out Top
You’ll need a top for more formal ocassions (holidays, parties, etc.) and this satin cami totally fits the bill. It comes in a variety of colors and can be paired with any bottom.
Bottoms
Short Skirt
I love skirts, so I’d definitely recommend this black leather skirt. Its super cute and would look great on date night, going out, etc. It’s pretty versatile and you’d get a lot of use out of it.
Midi Skirt
I have a black skirt like this and it is the BEST. So versatile, so cute, and comfy! This easily dresses up, dresses down, and is work appropriate thanks to the length! Seriously, I love this.
Jeans
Jeans are also really versatile and I think they could definitely have a place in your capsule wardrobe.
Work Pants/Trousers
These are nice and classy. Trousers have also been super in lately and these can be dressed up and down.
Dresses
Work Dress
Perfect for a break from suits, this work dress is cute but professional.
Cute Sundress
You’ll want something fun and light for summer or hanging out. I think something like this sundress would be so cute!
Outerwear
Blazer
A nice blazer is definitely useful and may be mandatory depending on where you work. Plus, Gen Z has made blazers casual. It’s just a great thing to have in your closet. While I have not tried this one, it has a 4 star ratings with over 13,000 reviews and comes in a bunch of colors.
Trench
A trench is great for the seasons and a nice basic to have on hand.
Leather Jacket
Leather jackets look so good and can be used for so much!
Basics/Necessities
You’ll probably already have a bunch of these, but they should definitely be included in a post on how to build a capsule wardrobe so nothing gets left out.
Socks
Socks are obviously a necessity. I feel like I don’t need to elaborate further on this so I won’t! This variety pack offers a few options and you can choose if you want neutrals, colors, plain white, etc.
Underwear
These are also obviously a necessity. Here’s some seamless ones so they don’t show!
Bras
Again, another (highly personal) basic. Given the wide variety of needs and types, you know your body/wardrobe best! Here’s some that I like for under clothes or sleeping.
Accessories
Small Purse
A small bag is great for going out or whenever you have a nice occasion to dress up for. I particularly like this one as it’s super classy and versatile.
I’d also get a larger bag that you can use for work or one that’ll at least fit your laptop/tablet so you’ll be covered for all your purse needs. If large totes aren’t your thing, but backpacks are, I’d check out this one here.
A small earring like these gold hoops or another stud
Gold hoops have been super in lately, but even if they weren’t super popular I’d still recommend these. They’re small and dainty, but still add a nice touch to all of your outfits.
Sunglasses
A definite must!
Lastly, a cute necklace to finish off your look. Great to wear with anything!
I hope that was helpful for inspiring you how to build a capsule wardrobe! Look for another post to come soon with shoes and workout clothes! Let me know if there’s anything else you think needs to be on this list.
