Did Mother’s Day sneak up on you and now you’re looking for a last minute gift? Or maybe you’ve been on top of it but don’t know what to write in your Mother’s Day Card. Either way, I’ve got your back! I think writing a heartfelt message to your mom in a Mother’s Day card is one of the most special things you can do – after all, it’s a personal way to show you care and it’s something your mom can’t do for herself!
But I know it can be tough to come up with the perfect words. I mean, there’s a delicate balance between trying to express how much you love and appreciate your mom without sounding too cheesy. That’s why I’m here to help you!

What to Write in a Mother’s Day Card
First off, why bother with a card? Sure gifts are great (and I have great gift guides if your mom loves to host or travel!), but a card is a tangible token of affection that your mom can keep. And more importantly, a card shows that you were intentional with conveying your sentiments and is a great way to show your mom how much you care!
So, how do you make your message heartfelt?
Express your gratitude.
- “Thank you Mom for all that you do” is great and she’ll be more than happy to read of your gratitude, but you know what’s even better? Including specific things that she does for you.
- For example: Thank you Mom for all that you do, but especially for the way that you always answer my calls even if it’s at 11am on a Wednesday when I’m trying to figure out how to fill out a form at the doctor’s office. (Yes, this is a real life example. Don’t judge me, lol.)
Talk about the impact that she’s had on you.
- For better (or worse), your mom has affected your life. Let’s focus on the positive and include some of those things! Trust me, she’s done more than you realize.
- Examples:
- I love how you always make time for me and it’s impacted the way that I treat my relationships as I do the same. You’re such a great role model!
- The way that you always have an encouraging word for me has really helped when I’m feeling discouraged and helps me remember not to sweat the small stuff.
- I love coming home to your cooking! Knowing that you make my favorites always makes me feel so treasured.
Make it personal.
- To make your card a hit, you should have been doing this all along (see examples above). It shows that you put thought into your message and it’s not just a generic greeting.
- Bring it home with a sweet memory you’ve shared this year or a favorite one you think about!

Sentimental/More Formal Example:
Dear Mom,
On this special day devoted to you, I want to take a moment to express my love and gratitude for all that you do! From [write something she does for you] to [another thing she does for you], you’re always thinking of me.

Funny Example:
Hey Mom!
Happy Mother’s Day to the coolest mom out there! You know, for someone who’s old enough to be a grandma, you’re still pretty hip. I mean, you still rock that ‘80s hairdo [or something else she does] like nobody’s business and your dance moves are still on point (even if they are a little bit embarrassing).
Thanks for always being there for me, even when I was being a total brat. And thanks for not disowning me when I [embarrassing thing you did] (even though you were secretly mortified).
You’re the best, Mom. Love you to the moon and back!
Your favorite child,
[Your Name]
Lighthearted Example:
Dear Mom,
Happy Mother’s Day to the woman who gave me life and showed me that I can be whoever I want to be.
I can’t thank you enough for all the sacrifices you’ve made for me over the years. From the countless hours spent shuttling me to and from soccer practice [or whatever activity you were involved in growing up], to the infinite patience you showed me when I was going through my awkward teenage years (I still cringe thinking about it!), you have always been there for me.
I don’t know how you managed to juggle a career, a marriage, and raising a child all at the same time, but you did it with style and grace (even if you did have to resort to the hidden chocolate when things got really stressful).
Thanks for being my safe place, my confidante, and my mom. I love you more than words can say.
Happy Mother’s Day!
Love,
[Your Name]
